Prof Amre Shahwan, Consultant Paediatric Clinical Neurophysiologist, CHI At Temple Street,
Back to Basics: About and Around Landau Kleffner Sydnrome
“Epilepsy came and speech went!”; Conditions and different presentations often mistaken for Landau Kleffner Syndrome (LKS) are relatively common despite pure LKS itself being not particularly common. This results in misdiagnosis and subsequently perpetuating erroneous management. In addition, there are other unique paediatric epilepsy syndromes resulting from abnormal epileptic activity originating around the same region involved in LKS. It is believed that LKS is part of a wider spectrum of “Epilepsy-Aphasia”. Is this a useful view? This session/lecture is a chance to go back to the very basics of understanding and defining LKS compared to other related and indeed unrelated entities. This lecture is a pure EEG and clinical endeavour with an opportunity for us to consolidate and anchor our knowledge and confidence in the ability to recognise and identify correctly when LKS is the correct diagnosis and perhaps more importantly when it is not.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This lecture series is primarily aimed at paediatric neurology trainees, however all trainees and Consultants are very welcome to attend.
